Now Welding Students Can Work with Laser Precision

In the College of canyons, welding technology department newly installed HDEm pulsed laser weld monitoring system on Valencia campus - the first ever installed in a school-DMC welding students are now able to learn the ins and outs of one of the most innovative processes in industry.

According Baber using laser welding of welder is too fast so the quality can not be assessed accurately.

HDEm system uses an external camera "smart", which is attached to the focusing head of the welding system, which allows the detection of flaws in the weld joint, mechanical interference with welding and overall quality of welds produced by the laser.

Funding for HDEm device and develop relevant curriculum for students to study was made possible by the recent National Science Foundation (NSF) grants are awarded to college to train students as advanced production and processing technicians and to meet current and future industry search.

According to Baber, the CoC is the first institution for training of any kind, to have laser welding monitor-which means a lot of college students are learning with technology that most 20-year industry veterans do not even have access to. "

"Techniques of the industry that are currently used to assess the quality of laser welds are expensive and small details," said Engel. "With the system of monitoring of welding by laser, students will learn about laser welding and how to evaluate with accuracy and report digital quality of welding in a matter of seconds after the completion of the welds."

Baber and Engel relations dates back to working together with the American Welding Society. Both are esteemed members of laser welding standards subcommittee, which Engel serves as Vice-President.
With the recent installation of the CoC welding students already have their hands on a phenomenal opportunity to get ahead in an industry prepares for rapid growth.

Baber want the students are ready to work anywhere with a quality that exceeds what is desired by conventional firms.
